Secondary education in Novi Kneževac has a tradition of over 100 years. The Serbian school inspectorate in Novi Kneževac existed as early as 1876.

The apprentice and craft school is mentioned in 1903/04, where in 1910 a football club used its premises. The male craft school existed in 1912, and in 1923/24 it became a craft and trade school (with trades: – 1st grade – tailor, carpenter, slipper maker, barber, blacksmith, baker and merchant – 2nd grade – merchant, locksmith, tailor and blacksmith – 3rd grade – merchant, shoemaker, slipper maker, barber and blacksmith).

The current gymnasium was built in 1935 as a Sokol Hall with the help of donors (the Sokol society existed from 1929 to 1937). The school changed its name following transformations and reforms in education.

Since 1954, it existed as a School for Students in the Economy, and since 1957 as a School for General Education of Workers. The Economic School began operating in 1961 in the building where the municipal company is now located.

The gymnasium in Novi Kneževac was founded in 1962 with a natural sciences–mathematics track and a social sciences track in Serbian and Hungarian languages of instruction. The current school building was built in 1962, so both the Economic School and the Gymnasium moved into the new building. The school was then named “Braća Ribar” Gymnasium, and the following year the Economic School was closed.

During the period of vocationally oriented secondary education (introduced in 1975), from April 1, 1977, the school operated under the name “25 May” Secondary School. In 1978, the Gymnasium ceased to operate, and in the 1978/79 and 1979/80 school years, students were educated in cultural studies, legal, and translation tracks. At the same time, the school hosted satellite classes of the metalworking profession from the Center for Joint and Vocational Secondary Education “Petar Drapšin” in Ada.

The Economic School reopened in 1979 as a satellite department from Kikinda, and the chemical-technological program as a satellite department from Sremska Mitrovica. On June 30, 1983, integration took place with the Kanjiža school under the name “Bratstvo–Jedinstvo” Intermunicipal School Center for Vocational Secondary Education Kanjiža–Novi Kneževac.

Mechanical and chemical programs were located in this building. In the 1988/89 school year, a satellite class of the Transport School from Subotica was introduced. On July 1, 1989, the schools in Novi Kneževac and Kanjiža separated. The school was then named “25 May” Secondary School. The chemical school was closed in 1992. On March 19, 1993, the school was renamed “Dositej Obradović” Secondary School Novi Kneževac, within which a satellite department of the hospitality school “Jovan Trajković” from Zrenjanin was opened, and in 1994 a satellite department of the “Dušan Vasiljev” Gymnasium from Kikinda was also established.

The gymnasium in Novi Kneževac operated as a satellite department until 2001.

Since 2001, the gymnasium has been an independent institution.
